Making the Most of the Day
It’s strange that, no matter how busy or lazy the day, we still manage to fill it up with activities.
Some days, at the close of the day as I wind down before going to bed, I think about all the things we did during the day, and wonder whether some of those moments could have been put to better use. Or if I should have read two stories instead of one. Whether we should have driven to the store instead of walked. Whether I should have David do two pages of math problems instead of one.
It’s almost distressing to know that those hours and decisions are gone. Yet there’s joy in what we did do.
Today it was beautiful weather, so David went out and played outside for over three hours. When his mittens finally got soaked from the melting snow, he came in for lunch, then a bit of math work while I threw his coat in the dryer for half an hour. When the coat was dry, we put on his sneakers and walked to the store to pick up a few supplies.
When we got home, we played a game of Trouble, he painted a beautiful picture, had supper, had a visit from his grandma, played another game of Trouble with his dad while I came upstairs and worked. Then he came up, had a bath, we read a story, spent about an hour on a language workbook, and he fell asleep watching a Little Einsteins episode I had recorded for him.
I’ll stay up for a while and do some work so that I can take a few extra hours tomorrow to squeeze in more time teaching, playing and learning.
The days are so full, yet I wish we could fill them even more.
